Whether you want a textured feel for your product label, or you require a glossy finish, varnishing may be exactly what you’re after!
What is spot varnishing?
With spot varnishing, varnish is applied to specific areas of a label, rather than covering the entire surface. It is produced via rotary flexo plate transfer.
This is perfect for creating a striking contrast between the varnished sections and the rest of the label, helping make your logos, text or graphics stand out with a unique finish. Create a dynamic interplay between varnished and non-varnished surfaces and draw the eyes of potential customers.
Great for cosmetics, perfumes and high-end food and drink products.
What is tactile varnishing?
Tactile varnishing (also known as raised varnishing or high-build varnishing) is used to create a premium, textured feel for product labels. This is generally printed via a rotary or flatbed mesh silk screen system.
To achieve the desired effect, a thicker layer of varnish is applied to the label, resulting in a raised, textured and highly tactile finish. This tactility lends itself to high-quality products where touch is just as important as how it looks. Raised details give the impression of high-quality craftsmanship, and are often used to enhance the perceived value of wine bottles, spirits, and gourmet food packaging.
Which style of varnishing is right for me?
If your goal is to make your product feel as luxurious as possible, choose tactile varnishing.
If you prefer a subtle, yet impactful design, we recommend spot varnishing, as this allows you to create contrast and draw attention to specific areas without overwhelming the entire look.

Varnished labels are ideal for products that need to stand out or convey a premium feel. Industries like cosmetics, luxury beverages (such as wine and spirits), gourmet food, and health and beauty products often use spot or tactile varnishing to elevate their branding. They’re also perfect for promotional items, limited editions, and any product where first impressions matter.
Yes, varnishing works beautifully alongside other finishes like embossing, debossing, and hot foil printing. For example, combining tactile varnishing with foil accents can create a label that is both visually stunning and touch-friendly, offering a luxurious and memorable product presentation.
Most label materials, including paper, plastic, and synthetic substrates, can be varnished. However, the compatibility may depend on the type of varnish and the desired finish. Our team can guide you in selecting the best materials and varnishing options for your specific product needs.
Yes, varnished labels are highly durable. The varnish adds an extra layer of protection against scratches, smudges, and fading, ensuring your labels maintain their appearance even in challenging conditions. This makes varnishing an excellent choice for products exposed to frequent handling or moisture.
Varnishing adds a premium touch to your labels at a relatively low cost compared to other decorative techniques. The specific cost depends on the type of varnish, the complexity of the design, and the area covered. Spot varnishing is often more cost-effective, while tactile varnishing offers an enhanced, luxury appeal. Our team can provide a tailored quote based on your requirements.
